Carpets instantly uplift any room, bringing in warmth and coziness — that is, if they’re clean! Old, funky-smelling carpets can be a real bummer. Whether it’s from your kids constantly spilling their porridge or an unfortunate pet accident, the aftereffects don’t usually look too pretty.
If you’re wondering how to get the smell out of carpet, we’ve rounded up some nifty tips that we as homeowners swear by!
Step 1. Get to the Root of it
Before you can get to scrubbing, it’s important to know where it’s coming from and what the root cause of that musty smell is. Did your dog pee on the carpet again? Or is it just time for good old cleaning?
If you notice the smell is accompanied by moisture, your next move should be to inspect the padding underneath.
Step 2. Use Baking Soda
Baking soda is probably the most slept-on ingredient in your pantry right now. Not only does it fluff up your muffins and tenderize your meat, but it’s also a really good cleaner!
Here’s what to do:
- Sprinkle generously: Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet generously, wherever the smell is most noticeable.
- Let it sit: Wait around 15 to 30 minutes, if you’re in a hurry. Overnight, if you’ve got plenty of time on your hands. The longer the baking soda sits on the carpet, the more gunk it’ll absorb.
- Vacuum: Once you’re done waiting, give your carpet a good vacuum!
Step 3. White Vinegar for the Win
While we’re still in your pantry, grab that bottle of white vinegar on your way out. You’d be surprised at just how good of a deodorizer it is!
Here’s what to do:
- Make a solution: In a spray bottle, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water. You can add a little baking soda if you want.
- Spray: Spray the solution all over the carpet, making sure not to leave it soaking wet.
- Let it sit: After a couple of minutes, the smell will be completely gone. Yes, even that pungent smell of vinegar.
Step 4. Deodorizing Powders
With so many deodorizing powders available in the market, this should be too hard to find. If you’re looking to make some at home, however, here’s how to:
- Measure out 1 cup of baking soda
- Add 10 – 15 drops of any of your favourite essential oil. We recommend lavender and lemon.
Follow step 2 and you’re done!
Step 5. Steam Cleaning
If none of this works out, it’s time to bring out the big guns: your steam vacuum cleaner. This vacuum uses hot water and suction to extract any smells and dirt from your carpet. You can invest in one, or rent one if you’re not willing to spend that upfront cost.
Once you’ve steam cleaned, turn on a fan on the highest speed setting to help your carpet dry completely.
Step 6. Check for Mold
We took spills and accidents into consideration, however, another pressing issue could actually be mold! After closer inspection, if you notice any mold growth, it’s high time you call in some professional cleaners. Mold should not be handled without prior training.
Step 7. Freshen Up with Fabric Softener
For a final fresh touch, try mixing a little fabric softener with water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the carpet to leave behind a fresh scent; this one’s especially great if you’re looking for a soft, clean finish.
